Students are introduced to exercise and training techniques to prepare for personal training certification (the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology – CPT certification). The two labs include machine and free-weight resistance and cardiovascular training equipment.
This laboratory houses the equipment required for students to learn about and practice fitness assessment techniques as outlined in the Canadian Physical Activity, Fitness and Lifestyle Appraisal protocol.
Two group exercise studios are equipped with steps, cycles, exercise balls, tubing, BOSU balls, and a variety of other weight and exercise training equipment. Students learn a variety of formats in preparation for group exercise certification (Can-Fit-Pro – FIS).
This state-of-the-art facility houses strength, core and circuit training equipment. It is open for use by students as well as Humber varsity athletes. Students use this space to practice their skills in prescribing exercise and leading personal training sessions.
This is an egg-shaped chamber allows fast, non-invasive but highly accurate measurement of a person’s body fat that goes beyond the comparison of weight to height. Knowing a person’s body fat percentage can tell you about athletic performance, or even how much your weight plays into your risk for cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
Our Exercise Physiology/Kinesiology laboratories are equipped for high tech assessment of athletic performance and physical health. The laboratories feature six metabolic carts (both MOXUS and Max-II units) for accurate, breath-by-breath measurement of oxygen consumption, which is commonly known as VO2. Students learn how VO2 assesses energy use, and how it is used with elite athletes, cardiac patients or even assessing the fitness of the everyday person.

This is an egg-shaped chamber that looks like something from a science fiction movie. It allows fast, non-invasive but highly accurate measurement of a person’s body fat that goes beyond the comparison of weight to height. Knowing a person’s body fat percentage can tell you about athletic performance, or even how much your weight plays into your risk for cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
Through hands-on experiences students learn how the specific measurements of physical fitness allow Exercise Physiologists, Personal Trainers and Kinesiologists to determine a person’s state of health and level of athletic performance. This information helps determine how to safely optimize training and exercise programming.
The Qualisys system is a state-of-the-art motion capture system that is used in many industries, including sports biomechanics, animation, and in clinical gait (walking) labs. The system enables the students to digitize markers in three dimensions, essentially turning a moving person into a wireframe on the computer. One of the unique aspects of our system is the integrated force plate instrumented treadmill. This allows analysis of the forces produced during running, jumping, and other activities. Motion capture systems are also used in clinical settings, such as in gait (walking) labs. Experience with this system sets our students apart with hands-on experience in research grade equipment that is widely used throughout the fitness and clinical fields.
