Standard First Aid & CPR

Does Your Program or Employer Require First Aid and CPR Training?

Humber College offers a variety of First Aid and CPR classes in collaboration with the Canadian Red Cross. The First Aid & CPR classes are designed to teach lifesaving skills such as first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillation (AED). Courses are offered for students, health care providers, first responders, and the general public.

If you are a Humber College student: Which course does your program require?

Mindful Verbal De-escalation Skills

Course Code: WKSH HS1

This online, self-study workshop is designed to introduce background factors involved in interpersonal conflict. It presents consideration of nonverbal and paraverbal factors in situations of an escalating client in a workplace setting. It introduces early warning signs of potential aggressive behaviour and provides example scenarios of verbal escalation responses. Through video presentation, de-escalation techniques in a professional relationship are demonstrated and explored. A debriefing model that develops therapeutic rapport is examined, equipping students with the tools they need to successfully navigate challenging client interactions.

Humanistic Healthcare Leadership

Course Code: HUML 100

Humanistic leadership takes leadership to the next level. Humanistic leaders recognize that their greatest assets include both their staff and their clients/patients. They also recognize that human beings have inherent strengths and resources, as well as an innate desire to move toward fulfilment. They know how to build and sustain an organizational culture with value-congruent behaviour that facilitates and supports these strengths and resource, and one which ensures the organization’s strategic ability to respond to change with flexibility and grace.

Each course consists of three scheduled hours of synchronous learning and three hours of asynchronous learning, delivered over five weeks. Participants will receive a micro-credential in Humanistic Healthcare Leadership upon the successful completion of all three courses.

Open Mind: Mental Wellness for Front Line Professionals

Course Code: MTLW

Humber’s Open Mind: Mental Wellness for Front Line Professionals micro-credential program gives you the skills you need to create work-life balance amid the demands of work for first responders and health care professionals. Begin a rewarding journey supporting yourself and others such as paramedics, firefighters, police officers, and nurses.

This program is designed in collaboration with mental health advocates, ensuring you are learning current and relevant material. You will learn:

  • foundational skills in mental health and wellness, suicide prevention and intervention, and the cost of caring
  • understanding trauma, workplace culture, and seeking key supports and resources
  • key issues of mental health experienced by first responders and their family members
  • leadership, reducing stigma, and building resiliency

Through building solid supports in daily routine, you will learn to balance the physical and emotional challenges that come with a career as a first responder, and become familiar with the wellness techniques used to maximize healing, resilience, and positivity.

Registered Nurse Refresher Certificate

Coming January 2023

This certificate is designed for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) who have been out of practice for more than three years and/or have identified competency gaps in their education. The program is offered in a blended format, with many online courses. Content includes topics like health assessment across the lifespan, pathophysiology of common disease conditions, and entry to practice standards within the Canadian context.

The certificate will provide learners with an understanding of trends in the nursing profession using relevant, competency-based assessments. Learners will learn to develop evidence-informed nursing interventions, and build collaboration skills with nurse colleagues, patients, families, and other interprofessional team members.

This certificate is based on the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) entry to practice standards. Completion of the certificate academically prepares the learner for an entry-level RN position within an acute medical surgical setting.

Medical Surgical Nursing

Course Code: MSRG

This intensive program is designed to provide the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) the knowledge and skills required to provide comprehensive care to patients in the acute care and clients in long-term care. The program is offered asynchronous and synchronous delivery of study modules for learning. The theoretical study modules are divided into two courses. The third course of the program will provide students with a supervised clinical experience. Concepts such as patient assessment, critical thinking and analysis, problem solving, ethics, and effective communication are emphasized in the program. In addition, holistic care, system review, general medicine and mental health challenges will be addressed in conjunction with completion of health assessment course as pre-requisite for this program. Theory-based knowledge and skills will be integrated using case studies, journal reflection, participatory group discussions, video presentation, and current research findings. Upon completion of this certificate, the student will be prepared to take RPN Medical-Surgical Certification with the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA).
