Why did you choose Humber College?

I chose Humber because I highly value Humber’s reputation and upon further reading and research on the ECE program, I believed that the program would better equip me to work and support children and families within the community.

What are your career aspirations?

Before applying to the program, I was working at a childcare centre as an ECE assistant, and I did not feel thoroughly prepared to work with children and their families. I wanted to further understand how children learn and how I as an ECE could support them by creating a more positive and inclusive learning environment. My career aspirations are to work with children at a childcare centre that supports children with diverse needs and learning experiences. However, I know there are many possibilities and that with further studies, I can branch out but continue with the trajectory to working in an environment that supports children and their families.

How have the faculty helped you on your road to reaching your goals?

The faculty have helped me through the course of my programming first, by being very supportive and encouraging. When there were issues that I experienced, they supported me and listened. The wealth of information they shared about their own experiences in addition to the curriculum they developed also contributed to helping me reach my goals. I had a drive to soak up as much knowledge and information in each class because it was important for me to gain learning experiences that I can apply to my future career.

What would you say has been the single best learning experience in the program you are in?

I would say it’s difficult coming up with the single best learning experience in the program. There were different elements brought together that made the program a great learning experience for me. In addition to in-class learning, we also receive practical experiences, such as a visit to the Humber Arboretum to experience the importance of the outdoor natural environment and how to incorporate that with the indoor classroom environment, as well as our placements at various childcare centres.

What elements of the program are best preparing you for your career?

Some of the elements that helped me in preparing for my career were the courses that included learning about advocacy and social justice, the diversity of families and how to support them and their children through not only pedagogical practices but coming alongside them in partnership and working together to empower children to become successful members of their community. Another element was to collaborate with peers in a positive, responsive and inclusive environment. So, in turn we can transfer those practical skills to our work environment.

Would you recommend this program to others and why?

I would recommend this program to others who want to pursue their career in relation to children and families because of what the program offers and the faculty involved who support students in gaining the skills and knowledge in an inclusive and responsive environment.
