Program Overview

Humber’s Personal Support Worker certificate program gives you the skills you need for an in-demand career. Personal support workers play an especially important role in supporting the health-care team in long-term care, hospitals, home care and community health-care organizations. They contribute to the overall well-being and quality of life of their clients.

Students will learn to safely assist with personal care, mobility, in some cases household management, and emotional support for individuals across the lifespan. Additionally, students will learn to recognize the physical and emotional changes of aging and illness while supporting clients to maximize their independence.

With state-of-the-art facilities, committed professors, and valuable work-integrated learning, Humber students have a competitive edge.

Work-Integrated Learning

Throughout the program, students will participate in 300 hours of field experience. In Semester 1, students learn and practise important personal support worker skills in Humber’s simulation learning lab and apartment. In Semester 2, students complete two unpaid field experiences in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Two unpaid field experiences allow you to gain valuable hands on practical and professional skills which will serve you well in your career. Beginning the first week of January, the Semester 2 field experience is divided into two rotations over 13 weeks: 160 hours in a long-term care (LTC) facility and 120 hours in a community agency. Hours and number of days per week vary depending on the type of facility and shifts assigned; most range from seven to eight hours per day or evening. The long-term care experience is fully supervised in the LTC centre. During the community experience, students have field advisors who visit on a regular basis to support student learning.

Visit Future Students > Work-Integrated Learning > to learn more about your WIL power and other success stories.

Also take time to explore the digital Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellness Student Handbook to learn foundational WIL concepts, plus requirements specific to this program.

What Can I Expect?

What can you expect in the Humber PSW program that is exciting and interesting?

You will be part of a very culturally diverse student population. This will help you to increase your awareness of your own culture and the positive aspects of other cultures.

In the first semester of the PSW program there are over 100 students. While this sounds large, the class sizes are small. There are approximately 45 students per theory section and 8-10 students per clinical group. Within those groups you will develop support systems, networks, and friends to help you.

You will have professors and clinical teachers who are extremely well prepared academically and professionally. All professors and clinical teachers are registered nurses or registered practical nurses who have worked in long-term care, hospital, or community settings before their work in post-secondary education.

The goal of all the professors is to help you succeed in the program; however, your success is a shared responsibility, and you must do your part by attending classes and clinical, completing assignments on time, and studying for examinations.

The program includes mandatory field placements where you will have the opportunity to practice your newfound skills and knowledge with supervision. It is paced to match the level of knowledge you have gained from the theory courses. Field experiences include long term care and community agencies. Humber has relationships with more than 100 agencies and makes every effort to give you the best possible experience in all the areas you could potentially work in after you have graduated.
