In my current professional capacity, I serve as the Regulatory Affairs/Quality Assurance Manager for a natural health company. My primary responsibility is to ensure compliance with the standards and quality guidelines established by the Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) for products being introduced into the Canadian market.
In addition to regulatory compliance, I also facilitate product webinars and presentations to highlight new product launches and promotional pieces. This allows me to effectively communicate product details to key stakeholders while adhering to industry best practices.
During my time living in Saskatchewan, a close friend introduced me to a program that piqued my interest, as it aligned with my science background and career aspirations in pharmaceuticals or natural health products. Despite being previously unaware of this program and field, I conducted thorough research to ascertain the potential career path it could offer. Following due consideration, I submitted an application, and if accepted, my husband and I were prepared to relocate from Saskatchewan to Toronto (since the program was an in-person delivery at the time). With an inherent desire to obtain a management role, I am pleased to say that my aspirations have become a reality.
The program was instrumental in setting me on the path to where I am today. It provided me with a solid foundation in the principles of regulatory affairs and quality assurance that are essential in ensuring product compliance with industry standards. Additionally, the program equipped me with the necessary skills to conduct thorough research and analysis, enabling me to make informed decisions when navigating the complex regulatory landscape.
By successfully completing the program, I gained valuable insights and knowledge that have been crucial in my current role as a Regulatory Affairs/Quality Assurance Manager. The program played a pivotal role in preparing me to navigate the intricacies of the natural health industry, and it has undoubtedly helped me to achieve professional success.
If someone is considering a career in regulatory affairs and quality assurance, my advice would be to first gain a thorough understanding of the industry landscape, including the regulations and guidelines that govern it. This will require a willingness to invest time and effort in research, self-education, and networking with industry professionals.
It's also essential to have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as the field demands a high level of attention to detail and the ability to analyze complex data. Strong communication skills are also crucial, as the role often involves liaising with cross-functional teams, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.
Finally, this is a great program because this allows the students to seek out relevant internships or job opportunities to gain practical experience and exposure to the field. This will not only enhance their skillset but will also provide them with a better understanding of what a career in regulatory affairs and quality assurance entails.
