Program Overview

The Medical Laboratory Technology advanced diploma program prepares students with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to become integral members of the health-care team as registered medical laboratory technologists. Through a blend of classroom learning, laboratory activities and clinical placements, students develop the knowledge, technical and critical thinking skills essential to safely and reliably collect, analyze and interpret patient specimens in a fast-paced clinical environment. Students develop the organizational and technical skills to perform their work with efficiency, accuracy and precision in accordance with quality assurance guidelines.

Students in this in-demand, high-tech health-care program learn to operate sophisticated equipment in all five core disciplines: microbiology, clinical chemistry, transfusion medicine, histology and hematology. The integration of simulation and clinical practicums throughout the curriculum supports learners with gaining the proficiency needed to successfully challenge the CAMLPR field of practice competency assessments.

Work-Integrated Learning

Throughout the program, learners will participate in simulated and/or off-site clinical practicums beginning in Year 2 of the program, giving learners valuable hands-on experience. These mandatory professional practicums provide students with the opportunity to integrate medical laboratory technologist skills and knowledge in a supervised setting. Simulation activities at the Humber campus are a key component of practicums to ensure all learners have ample time and opportunity to practice and gain proficiency in all required competencies.  Simulated and clinical practicums will take place in Semester 3-7 and each practicum will focus on one of the five main disciplines within medical laboratory technology. Off-site clinical practicums will be within one of the many agencies Humber has a strong clinical relationship with. As a result, practicum experiences are diverse, covering a broad range of settings including, for example, private clinics and hospitals.

In both the simulated and off-site clinical practicum, students will be supervised and supported by one of Humber’s experts in clinical practicum education.

After completion of two semesters of theory and laboratory course work, learners will participate in an unpaid professional practicum to gain valuable hands-on experience. This mandatory professional practicum provides students the opportunity to integrate medical laboratory assistant skills and knowledge in a supervised setting. Humber maintains strong partnerships within the community, resulting in practicum experiences that are diverse and cover a broad range of settings including, for example, private clinics and hospitals.

Clinical practicums will be supervised directly by one of Humber’s experts in clinical practicum education. On-campus simulation activities are also a component of the practicum to ensure all learners have ample time and opportunity to practise and gain proficiency in all required competencies for certification as a medical lab assistant.

Clinical Placement Locations and Student Responsibility
While every effort is made to place students in their preferred clinical location, placement opportunities are dependent on site availability and program needs. As a result, students may be assigned to placements outside of their preferred region, including locations across Ontario. Students are responsible for any costs associated with travel, temporary relocation or accommodation required to complete their placement. We recommend planning ahead and maintaining flexibility throughout the placement process.
