Name: Surekha
Program: Personal Support Worker
Year of graduation: 2024
I chose to attend Humber College as it is recognized as a preferred choice of education for the Personal Support Worker Program. Being very close to where I am living also makes this school an ideal location. I chose this program to change my career as a department manager to a career path that is meaningful and satisfying and I found PSW to be that exact career path.
The faculty helped me towards my goal of learning and securing a career in PSW by informing me about practices and understanding the many different variables in the PSW career. With my newfound knowledge I can apply theory and practical aspects in the field.
Due to me being a mature student, my overall experience was quite positive. I received a lot of guidance from both instructors and my fellow classmates who are very much younger than me. Practicing labs allowed me to gain knowledge and hands-on experience in the workplace.
Field placement is required in the course. This put me into the field and gave me the chance to showcase my newfound knowledge. You get to practice exactly what is taught throughout the curriculum. This program and the field experience has given me the opportunity to show how much of a caring and compassionate person I am.
The program has really opened my eyes to the daily task required in the field of being a PSW and perform these tasks to the best of my abilities. If I were to give advice to my first semester self, I would tell myself to learn and study as much as possible as I have learned that being a PSW can be fast paced, and the course gives you a lot of information to learn.
