Student Testimonial - Daniel

Name: Daniel
Program: Personal Support Worker
Year of graduation: 2024

Why did you choose Humber College? And why/or this program?

I chose Humber College because it has a good reputation among employers. I chose Personal Support Worker so that it could be a stepping stone to nursing.

How did the faculty help you on your road to reaching your goals?

They were instrumental in teaching me how to apply the theory taught in class at the simulation labs.

What was your experience like at Humber College? Within your program? The faculty? The labs? Student Life?

Humber College prepares personal support workers for the job market. There is a lot to be covered within the program over a short duration. This forced me to manage my time wisely everyday. Faculty members are always supportive. They answered all my questions. Prior to asking lectures questions, l discussed the same with my classmates. The simulation labs were an environment where one would practice and perfect the necessary skills for providing quality care.

Did you have a Work Integrated Learning experience? (otherwise known as a field placement, an internship, a practicum). What was your biggest take away from that?

I did a placement at both a long-term care facility and a community setting. The biggest take-away for me is treat seniors the same way you would treat your loved ones. Have patience, empathy and perform tasks well without shortcuts.

How did the program set you on your path to where you are now?

The program imparted in me the skills set required to provide quality care to resident/clients.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your first semester self?

I connected with the people in my own class however I should have spent more time networking with students in the other PSW cohorts as well. Networking is beneficial to all. We can share knowledge, support each other, offer perspectives, and later perhaps help with possible job opportunities.
