Why did you choose Humber College? and/or this program?

I chose Humber College for its notable reputation and the pioneering nature of its Infection Prevention and Control graduate program. As the first institution in Canada to offer such a program, I saw it as a great opportunity to receive graduate level education in infection control from a reputable institution.

How did the faculty support you?

The faculty at Humber College were instrumental in guiding me towards my goals. Their profound knowledge and unwavering support ensured that I never felt directionless in my learning journey. Each instructor brought a wealth of knowledge to the table, enriching our educational experience.

Recognizing that your Humber program was online, did you use any Humber online resources, connect with staff (other than faculty)? In other words, any comments on your overall Humber experience?

My experience with the program, which primarily took place online, was positive. This format provided the flexibility needed to balance studies with other commitments while still offering robust learning opportunities. The simulation labs, provided invaluable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application.

Did you have a Work-Integrated Learning experience? (otherwise known as a field placement, an internship, a practicum). What was your biggest take-away from that?

The 210-hour work placement was a pivotal component of the program. It provided me with the opportunity to gain practical experience as an infection control professional. The experience underscored the importance of teamwork and effective leadership in this field.

How did the program set you on your path to where you are now? Your Career Trajectory?

The program not only facilitated practical experience but also equipped me with a solid academic foundation. Courses such as Microbiology, Epidemiology, and Clinical Infection provided me with essential knowledge that not only helped me pass the Long Term Care Certification in Infection Prevention (LTC-CIP) examination but also positioned me for success in future endeavors, including the Certification in Infection Control (CIC) examination.

Moreover, the program also served as a catalyst for my career evolution. As a registered nurse with a newfound interest in infection control, it provided the perfect avenue to explore this specialty. Following my placement at a Long Term Care facility, I transitioned into the role of an IPAC lead, employed by the same company. I was able to obtain my LTC-CIP certification. I am now working towards the CIC certification to further enhance my expertise in this field.

Some students attend post-graduate studies right after their degree/diploma, and some return to school after years of being away from it. Comment on your experience, and looking back what advice would you give to your first-semester self?

If I could turn back time, I would reassure my first-semester self to maintain calmness, organization and focus. Hard work, coupled with self-belief, is the recipe for success in any endeavor.

Any Suggestions for Aspiring Professionals?

For anyone considering a career in infection control, I wholeheartedly recommend Humber College's program. The extensive placement period offers ample opportunities for skill development, networking, and potential employment. Moreover, the dedication and expertise of the faculty ensure a supportive environment conducive to success.
