Why did you choose Humber? and/or this program?

I chose the Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS) program at Humber because it’s a newly established program that reflects the rapid growth and innovation within the hearing healthcare field. Humber’s reputation as a polytechnic institution, combined with its investment in state-of-the-art equipment, provided the ideal learning environment for both theoretical and practical training.

How did the faculty help you on your road to reaching your goals?

The faculty played a crucial role in supporting my growth. They not only delivered high-quality instruction but also ensured the labs were equipped with the latest technology, which greatly enriched my hands-on learning experience. Their guidance and open-door approach made it easier to stay focused and motivated throughout the program.

What was your experience like at Humber? or within your program? Think about the faculty, the labs, student life.

My experience at Humber has been incredibly rewarding. The first year emphasized foundational theory and knowledge, while the second year shifted toward hands-on clinical practice. This balance was perfect for building confidence and competence. The supportive faculty, well-equipped labs, and vibrant student community made learning both effective and enjoyable.

Did you have a Work-Integrated Learning experience? (otherwise known as a field placement, an internship, a practicum) What was your biggest take-away from that?

Yes, Work-Integrated Learning is a major highlight of the program. In third semester, our placements were at the on-campus Humber Hearing Clinic. This was a great transition from classroom learning to a clinical setting, supported by experienced professors. In fourth semester, we were placed in external clinics where we gain real-world experience. These placements gave me the confidence and practical skills to feel truly prepared for a career as a Hearing Instrument Specialist.

How has the program set you on your career path?

The program has thoroughly prepared me for my future role. The blend of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and real-world experience through placements has given me the confidence and competence to enter the field with a strong foundation. I now feel ready to contribute meaningfully to the hearing healthcare industry.

Think back to first semester, what advice would you give to your first-semester self?

I would tell myself to enjoy every moment of the journey. Make the most of the friendships, the amazing faculty, and the diverse student community. This program offers more than just education—it’s a chance to grow personally, learn about different cultures, and create lifelong memories and connections. Be open, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Do you have any suggestions for someone considering this field?

This is a dynamic and rapidly evolving field where you can truly make a difference in people’s lives. Hearing technology is advancing fast, and as a Hearing Instrument Specialist, you’ll have the opportunity to help individuals reconnect with the world around them. It’s a deeply rewarding career that combines healthcare, technology, and human connection.
