I chose Humber because it had the practical experience, I was looking for in conjunction with my university background. After extensive research, going to the North campus, talking with various people and their experience, my gut knew this would be the place for me!
My career aspiration was always to bridge my love of fitness with medicine to help people physically on the ground level which then stems into mental health. Over the years, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to help hundreds and thousands of people get healthier, move better and sustain longevity; to the point where now I want to open / own my own gym. I’ve been working in the industry for about 10 years now, working my way up the chain and finally built up enough experience and confidence in my abilities to now want to branch out.
The faculty of Fitness & Health Promotions definitely taught me more than just the science behind the scenes but also taught me the business side of fitness; how to network, market, build connections as well as credibility and a reputable image of myself.
Staying in touch with professors definitely helped me over the years in my growth and development as I always send an email when I feel lost. The program coordinator has been a huge inspiration and motivation for me as a student of the game but also a great mentor when it comes down to the care and empathy hence why they will always be a fantastic professor and asset to the program itself.
Definitely the labs and the practical aspects were hands down the best thing to offer students like me who are hands-on and visual learners. I can’t stress enough how much this makes a difference, especially coming from a university background where things were all DIY and theoretical. Practical learning makes the biggest difference when you are put to the doing rather than the talking.
Fitness assessments and Exercise prescription were the best things in preparing me as I had a template and format that has evolved over the years based on my experience and clientele needs. Everything from anatomy, physiology, nutrition, everything plays a role down the line but if you don’t have proper structure or template, everything falls apart.
I ALWAYS recommend this program to others because of what it did for me on a molecular level. The skills I gained and learned from Humber superseded my previous university experience because of the level of care the professors had, the attention to detail in how and what we learned, the opportunities given to us, the information and technology is up to date, there’s really no downside to attending this program as you can then bridge into the Guelph Humber Kinesiology program if you wanted to. I have nothing but high praises for this program so if you’re into fitness, health and wellness, this is THE go-to program across the nation.
