Why did you choose Humber College?

I chose Humber College due to the availability of the program that I was interested in (Fitness and Health Promotion). I looked at the courses offered and was intrigued by the combination of science and real-life application.

What are your career aspirations?

There are so many different roles that a fitness professional may be qualified for that I have decided that my ideal career consists of a combination of group training, one-on-one sessions, and marketing roles. My current role represents this hybrid perfectly. Most of my day consists of managing back end operations of a corporate fitness facility, however I also have the opportunity to lead classes and deliver personal training sessions. This model ensures that I do not reach the point of burnout in any one area, and stay passionate about my chosen career path.

How have the faculty helped you on your road to reaching your goals?

The instructors are true experts in their fields. Not only do they share their knowledge and experience, but they really are invested in helping each student succeed. They challenge students to think critically and create opportunities to network and learn with industry examples.

What would you say was the single best learning experience in the program you are in?

The on-campus work placement that paired students with a volunteer to personal train was an incredible opportunity to apply the skills taught in the program, both in person and online. Having the experience of creating a training plan for someone’s specific goals helped me develop the ability to be a good trainer that could be both knowledgeable, encouraging and flexible to deliver what the client needed.

What elements of the programs are best preparing you for your career?

The courses of exercise prescription were fundamental in understanding how to create an effective training prescription for different types of clients based on scientific principles. Group exercise classes helped me step outside my comfort zone and really develop the assertiveness and leadership required to be a great fitness trainer. The on-campus work placement and industry internship helped me prepare for real-life scenarios and explore different roles as a fitness professional.

Would you recommend this program to others and why?

The program covered all the relevant topics of the fitness industry including nutrition, anatomy, physiology, exercise prescription, marketing and more. The field placements were a big draw as well to get industry experience. You are able to network both with professors, with alumni, and with fellow students. The combination of courses, instructors and industry experiences is unparalleled and upon graduation, gives you a really amazing advantage as a fitness professional.
