Why did you choose Humber College? and/or this program?

I have always had a passion for biology, exploring tiny creatures through a microscope at home and conducting mini experiments in school, where my fascination with laboratory work deepened. Upon graduating, I was certain about my desire to pursue a major in a biology-related field. That’s when I found Humber College, the perfect place to dive deeper into my interest. Humber’s outstanding bioscience laboratories aligned perfectly with my ambition to gain practical skills for my specialty, involving numerous experiments and research. The balanced education, combining theory with hands-on lab work, made it the perfect fit for my academic goals. Moreover, knowing that there is reliable support at Humber, ready to assist with guidance on courses, career advice, or any challenges that may arise, was another significant factor in my choice of the institution. Beyond studies, Humber College’s commitment to providing facilities like a gym, swimming pool, and engaging weekly activities spoke to my desire for a balanced and enjoyable college life. Lastly, the convenience and safety considerations, including a nearby residence, further solidified Humber in as a comfortable and practical choice for me.

Moreover, their unwavering belief in me and their ability to recognize my strengths motivated me to do my best.

What was your experience like at Humber College? Within your program? The faculty? The labs? Student life?

My experience at Humber College has been truly fulfilling. From the very first day of orientation to this moment, it’s been a journey marked by growth, learning, and unforgettable memories. As a PASS leader and volunteer (Humber’s Peer Assisted Study Sessions program), I had the opportunity to not only deepen my understanding of the course material but also contribute to the academic success of my peers, developing a supportive learning community. The faculty’s dedication to providing practical knowledge greatly enhanced my educational experience. Moreover, the labs were amazing; every experiment was not only educational but also enjoyable, fostering a hands-on learning environment. Additionally, Humber’s resources, like the library, International Student Center, and Career Advice Center, provided invaluable support and guidance. Overall, Humber has provided me with a solid foundation for success in the biotechnology field and beyond and helped me grow personally and professionally.

In the Biotechnology program at Humber, I gained practical skills and insights from professors who provided real-world applications in each course. This helped me build a strong educational foundation and improve my communication skills. As a recent graduate, I am now actively applying the knowledge and skills learned from the program to pursue opportunities in the biotechnology field. The ongoing support from professors, coupled with my involvement in PASS (Peer-Assisted Study Sessions) and volunteering, has been fundamental in shaping my career trajectory. I am eager to contribute to the industry and continue growing professionally.

Think back to the first semester, what advice would you give to your first-semester self?

I would probably tell myself not to be afraid to ask for help from professors or classmates when needed, as it’s important to remember that seeking assistance is a sign of strength, not weakness. Moreover, professors have a lot of knowledge and can help you solve problems much faster than you can on your own. Additionally, I would advise myself to enjoy every single moment and opportunity that comes my way. College goes by quickly, so it’s important to make the most of it and enjoy the experience. Overall, I would encourage my first-semester self to stay curious, be proactive, and enjoy the journey of learning and growth.

Do you have any suggestions for someone considering this field?

For those thinking about entering this field, I strongly recommend gaining hands-on experience in labs and engaging in volunteer opportunities during your studies. Build connections not only with your fellow classmates but also with your professors as well- they can offer invaluable insights to deepen your understanding. Remember to study hard and consistently; a strong academic foundation is crucial in this field. Stay curious and take time to explore this field. Actively participate in events or activities such as Humber’s Open House and relevant workshops, where sharing your insights and experiences contributes not only to your understanding but also promotes an exchange of knowledge with the broader community in this field. It is a great way to connect with others who share your passion and enthusiasm.
