I am currently working as a Bioreactor Associate in a biotechnology company in Mississauga. Mainly, I work with different cell lines and viruses starting from cell revival, cell culture, viral propagation, and protein purification. I also work with bioreactors (vessels that provide optimal conditions for cells to grow), ensuring that the vessel is prepared for cell inoculation and infections, and is fully functional during the entire process up until the harvest date.
I have always wanted to work in a laboratory, handle chemicals, and all that. I chose Humber because I love that their labs are equipped with new machines that we could use, plus I just love the school vibe, and amenities that they offer.
The Biotechnology program at Humber not only gave me the basic skills essential for getting a career in Biotechnology, but my instructors also taught me the work ethics, and how to engage with people / scientists in the field, which greatly prepared me mentally on what to expect in this kind of field.
A lot of people are not aware of what a career in Biotechnology offers, or what even biotechnology is, but I can greatly say that having a career in Biotechnology gave me a sense of fulfillment. It gives you that feeling that there's more to science than what is normally shown.
