Why did you choose Humber College? and/or this program?

With over a decade of experience as a pharmacist in Brazil, I've felt compelled to expand my skills and knowledge, shifting my career towards the research field. Consequently, I made the decision to further my education at this renowned institution. This step represents my desire to explore pharmaceutical research further, associating it with biotechnological resources. I believe that this combined expertise provides tools to deal with complex challenges at the intersection of healthcare, science, and technology.

How did the faculty help you on your road to reaching your goals?

It was a period of exploration, learning, and building connections that have proven invaluable as I continue to pursue my career in biotechnology. The faculty members provided guidance and mentorship, they fostered a supportive learning environment both inside and outside the classroom. They ensured that I had access to the resources I needed to succeed, as well as provided academic support, helping me navigate complex subjects and challenging concepts. Moreover, they fostered an environment of collaboration and critical thinking. Working closely with successful professionals further enriched my journey.

What was your experience like at Humber College? Within your program? The faculty? The labs? Student life?

At Humber College, my experience was incredibly enriching, especially within the Biotechnology program. The faculty were supportive and knowledgeable, providing guidance both inside and outside the classroom. The labs are well-equipped and conducive to hands-on learning, which was crucial for someone like me aiming to gain practical experience in biotechnology. Student life was vibrant, and I found opportunities to engage beyond academics. Serving as a PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) leader allowed me to connect with fellow students and contribute to their academic success while improving my leadership skills. Volunteering in the biotechnology lab not only gave me valuable hands-on experience but also allowed me to collaborate closely with faculty members, further deepening my understanding of the field and expanding my professional network.

Did you have a Work-Integrated Learning experience? (otherwise known as a field placement, an internship, a practicum). What was your biggest take-away from that?

Even though there was not a specific field placement in my program, in the fourth semester I seized the opportunity to engage in both academic and practical experiences on campus that directly aligned with my studies. Alongside being a student, I served as a PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) leader, providing academic support to second-semester students through weekly peer-led study sessions.

Additionally, I volunteered in the biotechnology lab, working closely with faculty members to gain hands-on experience, develop essential laboratory skills, and contribute to ongoing projects. These experiences not only enhanced my skill set and improved my resume but also offered valuable networking opportunities and the chance to explore various career paths within the biotechnology industry, ultimately leading to my personal and professional growth.

How did the program set you on your path to where you are now?

The reasons behind my conviction that Humber was the ideal choice for this program arise from its exceptional resources, particularly its state-of-the-art laboratories and faculty expertise and support. These assets played an essential role in my professional development, laying a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for my career path, and have been instrumental in setting me on my current path by providing confidence in the field. Furthermore, the program's emphasis on real-world applications of biotechnology has broadened my perspectives and equipped me with the insights necessary to explore the complexities of the industry. Overall, Humber's Biotechnology program has been extremely valuable in preparing me for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Think back to the first semester, what advice would you give to your first-semester self?

Looking back on my first semester in biotechnology, I would remind myself to not get overly stressed about mastering every detail and to instead focus on enjoying the journey. Building a career in biotechnology is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is also about the experiences, connections, and personal growth that come along the way. I would encourage myself to embrace the learning process, to relish the moments of discovery and exploration, and to appreciate the relationships formed with classmates and professors. These connections are not only valuable for academic and career advancement but also for enriching life beyond the classroom. So, while dedication and hard work are essential, it's equally important to savor the experience, foster meaningful connections, and treasure the journey that lies ahead.

Do you have any suggestions for someone considering this field?

For individuals contemplating a career in biotechnology, my advice would be to build a really solid foundation, by mastering the fundamental principles of science. Additionally, active engagement and networking are vital, which allow exposure to various career paths and perspectives within the diverse areas of the profession. Hands-on experience is invaluable, not only for skill enhancement but also for gaining insights into the daily activities of the field. And above all: resilience. Given the complexity of the biotechnology program, perseverance and dedication are indispensable for success. Challenges will inevitably arise along the journey, necessitating the ability to deal with them while maintaining constant focus on long-term goals.
