Currently, I work as a Research Associate in a biotechnology company located in Toronto. This company specializes in rapid point-of-care testing through the development and manufacturing of Lateral Flow Assay test kits and Lyophilized beads used to identify certain human diseases and food safety.
I was always interested in new technologies related to the medical field, food industry and pharmaceutical industry and I wanted to learn how to incorporate biotechnology. This was the main reason that I decided to pursue Biotechnology studies at Humber College. I felt that the program met my expectations in both the theoretical and practical aspect. The location, hours of study and length of the program also met my needs.
The Biotechnology Program at Humber College has a wide offering of theoretical and practical courses that enhanced my knowledge in the different subjects related to Biotechnology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and others. Once I graduated from the program, I felt that I had the knowledge and hand-on experience to succeed in the Biotechnology industry. I started my career as a Laboratory Technician in the food microbiology field for a period of a year. Then, I decided to expand my knowledge and experience and I was able to obtain my current position as a Research Associate.
The advice to anyone considering the Biotechnology Program is to choose an institution that would offer a curriculum that incorporates both theoretical and practical courses. This is important in order to gain the necessary knowledge and practical experience. Biotechnology is a growing industry nationally and internationally and an important field worth considering.
