Student Testimonial - Marcelina

Name: Marcelina
Program: Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences
What semester are you in: Semester 6

Why did you choose Humber College? and/or this program?

I finished Humber’s Biotechnology Diploma program and was planning to continue my education into the Bachelor of Science. I was thrilled to find out about Humber’s new Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences program. Being a graduate of the Biotechnology program I was eligible to transfer all my credits into the Biomedical Science. Thus, instead of 4 years, I only have to complete 2 years to finish my bachelor’s degree. The Biomedical Science program offers high quality courses along with in-laboratory practice. My choice for Biomedical Science in Humber College was due to its practical and theoretical learning experiences.

Did you attend an Open House at Humber College or an Information Session? How was it helpful?

I attended an Open House before I started my Biotechnology program and found that it was very helpful for me to come to final decision. I was shown around the school and saw how the laboratories look. That was when I knew for certain that I wanted to pursue the scientific field of study.

What has your experience been like so far at Humber College? Within your program? The faculty? The labs? Student life?

Humber College made me feel comfortable and more willing to embrace my passion for learning. Coming from other educational institution, Humber allowed me to spread my wings. I am continuously encouraged to expand in my knowledge, participate in group projects, and partake in campus life. I created many connections and friends through my class. The labs are excellent representations of a workplace environment, keeping everything professional and within accordance to the protocol.

What is your favorite memory so far in the program? or favorite class?

My favourite memory by far are the laboratory practices, in which I learned the principal knowledge and received hands-on experience.

Have you had a Work-Integrated Learning experience yet? (otherwise known as a field placement, an internship, a practicum). What was your biggest take-away from that? Or, What are you looking forward to?

I have not started a Work-Integrated Learning experience yet – that is happening this summer, it’s scheduled between semester 6 and 7. I am looking forward to the experience, hoping it will provide me with a look at the real-work setting, the knowledge and confidence required for this profession.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your first-year self?

Looking back, I would tell myself to be more confident and daring in my capabilities and skills in this program. To be less fearful of asking questions and taking a lead in certain situations.
