Why did you choose Humber College?

As a mature student who has been out of high school for more than ten years, Humber College provided me with a flexible pathway to get into the Practical Nursing program without having to upgrade my high school diploma. I also heard that Practical Nursing graduates of Humber College have a high success rate in the licensing exams. Going through student testimonials, reading about the well-equipped simulation labs convinced me that Humber College was the right choice for me.

What are your career aspirations?

I’m planning to bridge into a RN program possibly at Humber College. I have always been interested in Public Health. I have volunteered with a Community Health Centre that focuses on women's health, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections. So, after my RN program, I plan to go into Public Health Nursing with focus on Maternal and Child Health, HIV etc. My placement was at UHN - Toronto Rehab Institute (spinal cord rehab). I gained a lot of skills there and enjoyed the work environment. That’s another option I’m considering. My ultimate goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner.

How have the faculty helped you on your road to reaching your goals?

The faculty and my professors have been a great support system during my two years of study. They are approachable and go out of their way to help me solve my challenges. They are all highly knowledgeable in their fields and are ever eager to share their knowledge. They are great mentors in and out of class. They made learning during the pandemic a less stressful experience and less anxious one for me as a mature student.

What would you say has been the single best learning experience in the program you are in?

I have to say my pre-grad placement. During my pre-grad placement, I encountered real-life experiences of a Registered Practical Nurse. I learnt so many skills that will give me a great foundation for my nursing career. This experience boosted my confidence, competence, and communication skills because I was able to interact with clients, their families, and other members of the inter-disciplinary health care team on a daily basis.

What elements of the program are best preparing you for your career?

The courses that are tailored to give the required knowledge needed to become a competent nurse; the simulation labs where I practiced essential nursing skills and clinical placements that provided real life experiences for me.

Would you recommend this program to others and why?

Yes, I would recommend this program, 100%. The courses are designed to give you the knowledge needed to excel in the nursing profession. Also, the professors are vastly experienced in teaching, and they transfer their knowledge seamlessly. They care about their students holistically and go out of their way to help them succeed. The program also has well-equipped simulation labs where I was able to gain a lot of hands-on experience in addition to what I learned during clinical placements.
