I chose Humber because, as an international student looking to relaunch my career in Canada, I was seeking a program that aligned with my background in audiology and speech-language pathology from Brazil. When I discovered Humber’s state-of-the-art audiology lab—with soundproof booths, a variety of high-end audiometers, both handheld and tabletop tympanometers—I was immediately impressed. The comprehensive curriculum, combined with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the on-campus clinic, as well as the focus on interprofessional collaboration and business training towards the end of the program, made Humber my top choice. Even though I was accepted into other colleges, Humber stood out as the best fit for my goals.
I studied at the North Campus and had the privilege of learning from excellent professors right from the beginning. I always felt supported. As someone who enjoys actively participating in discussions and asking questions, I appreciated how the instructors were not only knowledgeable and professional, but also deeply dedicated to student growth. They continuously encouraged us to go beyond the basics and pursue both academic and professional development.
With my background in audiology, I was especially impressed by the faculty’s high standards in hearing assessment and their ability to teach complex topics clearly and effectively. One of the program’s highlights was the support we received during our final semester placements. Whether placed in clinics, hospitals, or with manufacturers, the faculty remained in close contact with us and provided exceptional guidance, and their support made my transition into the Canadian workforce smoother and more meaningful.
My experience at Humber’s North Campus was truly rewarding. The professors were outstanding, and I felt guided and supported throughout my journey. One of the key resources that stood out for me was the access to excellent materials through the library, both physical and online- something I deeply appreciated as someone who enjoys academic research and referencing peer-reviewed articles in my work. The audiology lab was another major highlight—fully equipped with up-to-date audiometers, verification tools, and hearing aids from top manufacturers. We had access to laptops for programming and fitting, and practiced earmold impressions on simulation mannequins like "Carl" before moving on to real patients, and these practical experiences were crucial in building confidence and competence before stepping into the real world.
Yes, the program includes two placement experiences. First, we practiced in Humber’s on-campus clinic under direct supervision, working with real patients and learning essential skills such as conducting hearing tests, providing patient feedback, making referrals, and performing programming and hearing aid trials. Later, I had the privilege of completing my external placement at a hearing aid manufacturer. There, I not only worked in a clinical setting at a gold-standard hearing clinic, but also learned about the entire behind-the-scenes process- production, customer service, product training, sales, and marketing, and this broader exposure gave me invaluable insight into the industry and was a key moment in shaping my professional growth.
This program reminded me that I’m fully capable of returning to the professional world doing what I truly love: audiology. It provided me with knowledge, hands-on experience, meaningful discussions, and lifelong connections and friendships. I now feel more confident and excited to contribute to the hearing healthcare field in Canada.
I would say: keep working hard, stay focused, and enjoy every minute of the experience, because amazing things are coming your way. This is a fascinating and impactful field—not just about assessing hearing, but about enhancing people’s quality of life through better hearing.
