Program Code: CB511
Credential: Ontario Graduate Certificate
Start Dates: September
Program Length: 2 semesters

Program Overview

Bioinformatics is an emerging, interdisciplinary field of study aimed at understanding and inferring meaning from scientific “Big Data”. To meet this rapid development, the Clinical Bioinformatics Ontario Graduate Certificate program was created - firmly grounded in theory, hands-on skills and application. You will learn to perform data mining, analyze scientific data, develop treatment plans and monitor trends presented in genetic data. You will also learn to develop methodologies and hypotheses within the medical informatics, computational biology and medical technology fields.

Students acquire expertise to utilize current bioinformatics software in order to manage large genetic databases to research the pathology of diseases and develop treatment hypotheses. This program also introduces students to the rapidly evolving fields of genomics and proteomics, and provides a core knowledge of analytical approaches used in these fields. Students will receive essential training in the use of industry-based software for biological data analysis including identification and evaluation of disease/disorder associated biomarkers and determination of therapeutic efficacy of drugs.

Courses Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  1. Identify relevant evidence-based research, trends, technologies, and standards within the field of bioinformatics to maintain currency in the industry.
  2. Apply bioinformatics and computational methods to the design, execution and interpretation of scientific research.
  3. Employ programming language and scripting versatility to be able to automate processes at the application level.
  4. Examine bioinformatics data to discover patterns, draw conclusions and generate predictions for subsequent experiments.
  5. Comply with legal obligations, as well as with the professional and ethical standards that ensure privacy, security and confidentiality in the access, retention, storage and disposal of personal genetic data and related health information.
  6. Use statistics in the analysis, collation and interpretation of data to make informed decisions.
  7. Complete complex genomic and proteomics applications using advanced principles of cell and molecular biology, pharmacology and toxicology, pathophysiology, endocrinology, and biochemistry.
  8. Collaborate and communicate with members of the inter-professional health care team to optimize the health and well-being of individuals, based on their genetic profile.

Work Placement

As part of your program, you will participate in one mandatory paid or unpaid 210-hour internship to gain professional work experience in the field of Clinical Bioinformatics. The work internship takes place during the second semester and can be extended into the summer as needed. Work will occur in diverse settings such as for-profit or not-for-profit enterprises, governmental or educational institutions, or health and wellness institutions.

The experience will enhance the theoretical learning in the program, giving you hands-on application in the field of clinical bioinformatics. Work experiences might include gathering, reviewing, mining, or explaining bioinformatic data and/or functioning as a member of a clinical bioinformatics team. Students will be supported throughout their field experience with various key supports and key faculty and staff from the program.
