Since 2006 there has been an increase in the number of first time writer failures among graduates of the UNB Humber BN program. This increase in the failure rate was the impetus for the research study. There is little current Canadian research published on the factors that contribute to baccalaureate nursing graduates’ success on the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE). According to the literature the development of a comprehensive database of factors and strategies to support graduate success on registration exams is needed. A quasi-experimental design including a retrospective review of student’s academic record using logistical regression analysis and an analysis of discriminatory functions; including high school or postsecondary institution of origin, grades at prior institutions of learning, clinical practicum performance issues and outcomes of academic misconduct findings was utilized. In addition individual personal interviews were conducted to gather qualitative data regarding the factors affecting each graduate’s outcome on the CRNE.
Based on our research findings a conceptual model was developed that facilitates a better understanding of the interrelatedness of success factors. As a result of these findings targeted strategies to support student and graduate success were developed.
These findings will be presented at Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) in June 2013.
