Mature Applicants

An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older (21 or older for degree programs) as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U level or equivalent.

College Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber will use your college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

University Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber will use your university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

Selection Includes Secondary Requirements:

Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated and the result of the evaluation of additional secondary requirements. Secondary requirements may include a portfolio, audition, letter of intent, references, etc., and vary by program. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission.


Post-Admission Requirements:

Upon acceptance into the program and prior to the start of classes, the following requirements must be completed:

  • A police record check (this program does not require Vulnerable Sector Screening).
  • A valid Class G Driver’s Licence is not required for year 1 of the program. However, the Class G Driver’s license is a requirement of most funeral homes and previous driving violations may restrict employment. Anyone who does not have a driver’s license will have a difficult time securing employment for their work placement and consequently will not be eligible to complete semesters 3-4 of the program.
  • You must obtain at least two of the three series Hepatitis B vaccine and a Two-Step Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test. Although you will not be in the presence of deceased individuals during your education on campus, you will be during your work placement. Funeral homes expect their staff to take precautions to avoid becoming ill. This process may take up to three months to complete so students should allow enough time to complete these requirements.

Graduates of any two-year diploma program at Humber who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 70% or greater will be eligible to enter year three of the 4-yr Bachelor of Applied Management (BAM) at the University of New Brunswick. Depending on the diploma program, students may be exempted from study in certain courses and therefore, requested to take alternate courses offered by the Faculty of Business.

In order to continue with your application for Funeral Director Class 2, you must complete this step in the application process. Applicant selection is based on academic criteria and results of these secondary requirements. This contains all the information you need to prepare and submit secondary requirements for consideration. Secondary Requirements

Applicants are required to submit a letter of intent, resume, and a questionnaire that demonstrates evidence of observation or work experience in a funeral home.

i. Letter of Intent
Applicants must submit a 300-word letter of intent that describes how they will demonstrate professionalism while working as a funeral director and have a positive impact on the funeral industry.

ii. Resume
Applicants must submit a current resume.

iii. Questionnaire
The questionnaire is to be completed by the funeral director who supervised your observation or work experience.

Submission Instructions
Applicants must submit the letter of intent and resume through SlideRoom. SlideRoom is a secure site where secondary requirements are collected, scored and stored. Log-in to https://humber.slideroom.com and create your free account. There will be additional instructions once your account has been created.

The questionnaire that documents the applicant’s observation and work experience must be downloaded from SlideRoom, provided to the funeral director who supervised them for completion, and emailed to fse.admission@humber.ca by the funeral director.  The questionnaire must be formatted as a PDF file with the applicant's name and student number in the subject line.

Applicants must meet both academic and secondary requirements in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility does not guarantee an offer of admission. 

All secondary requirements will be evaluated and a score will be calculated by the academic school.

Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Our Program

Humber’s Funeral Director Class 2 (Non-Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side while courses in arranging, ethics and introduction to embalming will enable you to explain all options to families in arrangements. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

The use of the funeral service labs, as well as a six-month paid work placement with co-operating funeral homes in Ontario, will aid you in gaining practical experience.

Humber also offers a Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) program FD211.

Courses Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director - Class 2 (Non-Embalming) role

  • Communicate clearly, sensitively and respectfully with potential purchasers all relevant information related to various options and possible implications of decisions made at the time of purchase, as permitted by legislation in the scope of practice for the specified licence classification including:

    • explaining funeral service and disposition options including arterial embalming and restoration
    • explaining clearly and accurately prearranging and prefunding services, product knowledge and merchandise and financial implications
    • managing effectively and sensitively all applicable contractual negotiations and obligations, financing options, and requirements for service and product delivery
    • referring to other licensed professionals when outside the legislative scope of practice
  • Communicate and apply an accurate and comprehensive understanding of prearranging and prepayment including investment vehicles, insurance, trust reconciliation and financing of prepaid contracts within legislative scope of practice

  • Conduct oneself in a manner consistent with principles and accepted practices of the funeral sector, using professional language

  •  Complete all aspects of business operations for a funeral establishment that provides embalming on site or transfer service, in the capacity of an owner/manager consistent with legislated responsibilities in a legal, ethical, safe and efficient manner across a broad range of predictable and unpredictable contexts

  • Arrange (prearrange) and document funeral services, disposition details, related transactions and follow up services with the legal representative in an effective, professional, caring and creative manner

  • Engage in, and plan for, ongoing personal and professional development, networking/community relations and inter- professional collaboration

  • Provide effective leadership and contribute to the supervision and mentoring of all team members, including licensees, support staff, and/or interns in a professional, caring and creative manner through providing appropriate direction as it relates to the delivery of funeral service

  • Lead, establish, maintain and participate effectively in funeral establishment work teams consisting of licensees, support staff and/or interns demonstrating at all times the ability to learn, grow and work together

  • Care for and handle the deceased respectfully and safely at all times

  • Complete and perform effectively and efficiently all non-embalming preparation processes

  • Direct funeral services and visitation in a respectful and sensitive manner consistent with the direction of the legal representative

  • Complete prepaid contract related documents and related financial matters in accordance with applicable legislation

  • Coordinate and deliver the selected disposition services and follow up services, effectively, professionally and consistent with, and supportive of, the wishes of the legal representative

  • Make decisions ethically and professionally based on a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and skills required of an owner/manager of the applicable business licence class pursuant to the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA).

Work Placement

The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the Funeral Director, Class 2 program shall complete a six-month work placement before they can be licensed. To progress into semester three, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in semester two. Semesters three and four are completed by distance and many of the assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students as they find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings; funeral homes will often send job postings to Humber. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with an Ontario funeral home.

Professional Accreditations & Recognition

Humber is recognized as one of two programs (the only English program) in Ontario approved by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. After completing the program and placement, graduates must complete an exam in order to be licensed. Once licensed, graduates are eligible to work in any of Ontario’s funeral homes and can apply to transfer their license to other provinces. There is an additional cost for certifications. Examinations are administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario.
