Important Information on Police Record Checks (“PRC”) also known as Criminal Record Checks
You MUST have a documented PRC in order to participate in clinical and/or field placements for your program. Failure to produce a documented PRC will result in inability to fulfil the requirements for a clinical or field course.
Obtaining a PRC takes time. Plan ahead so that you have the required documentation on time (often 8 weeks for some services). Your failure to plan cannot become our emergency.
A. Residents of Canada:
You will need to go to your local police service to request a PRC. It depends where you live which police service you request the PRC from (the police force according to your regular home address ie not Humber if you are in Residence or in temporary academic housing). We generally interface with three police services: Peel, Toronto and York.
All students require a “Vulnerable Sector Screening”; a standard PRC will not be accepted by your program.
- City of Toronto residents will require a “Consent to Disclosure form” signed by the Dean of the School. A hard copy of this form can be obtained from your program advisor or assistant/secretary. You are required to obtain a “Vulnerable Sector Screening Program – Police Reference Checks” from the Toronto Police Services, 40 College Street, Toronto ON. The student fee for this service is $16.95. Please note that no personal cheques are accepted. Payment must be sent with your application; otherwise it will be returned to the College and this will delay the processing of your application.
** update 2010/10/20: record checks for Toronto are now taking 12 weeks to process
- York Region residents: Employees and volunteers will be able to download the form from the York Regional Police (YRP) website and complete it, or obtain a form and complete it when you attend one of their Customer Service locations.
- Peel Region residents DO NOT require a signed form from the College. You must attend in person to the police headquarters to request the PRC. Make sure that you request Form A – for "Employment Records Search (Vulnerable Persons)”. The Records Search Unit is located at 7750 Hurontario Street, Brampton, ON.
There is a fee for the PRC and this depends on the individual municipality.

B. International Students:
Your student VISA will be considered proof of your police record check status for your first year of studying in Canada.
Starting from year 2 of your program, you will also need to obtain a PRC from the police service in the area in which you are living in Canada. Check whether this is Peel, York or Toronto.
What do I do if I cannot obtain a clear PRC?
First, meet with your program coordinator or program designate to discuss your situation. The coordinator will advise on your options. It is possible that you will not be able to participate in your clinical placement.
